NUR-SULTAN, May3, 2019 – The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Beibut Atamkulov, received the Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran to Kazakhstan, Majid Samadzadeh Saber. Issues related to the upcoming high-level bilateral visits were discussed during the meeting.
In particular, Kazakhstan expects the participation of the Speaker of Parliament of Iran, Ali Ardashir Larijani, at the 4th Meeting of Speakers of the Eurasian Countries' Parliaments, to be held on September 23-24, 2019 in Nur-Sultan.
The sides highlighted the historical importance of the Aktau Summit, within which the heads of the Caspian states signed the Convention on the Legal Status of the Caspian Sea. Iran is important to Kazakhstan in the context of the diversification of transit and transport routes.
The sides noted the need for more efficient use of theKazakhstan-Turkmenistan-Iran railway and the sea route through the Caspian Sea.Currently, there are also a number of promising areas for the development of bilateral cooperation, including collaboration in the railway industry, agriculture, tourism and other fields.
In recent years, there has been a decline in bilateral trade between Kazakhstan and Iran, which amounted to $516 million in 2018. Hence, the Foreign Minister invited the Iranian business to participate in the implementation of various investment projects in the agricultural, industrial and mining sectors in Kazakhstan.
The 16th meeting of the Kazakh-Iranian Intergovernmental Commission is planned to take place this year in Nur-Sultan.
Note for editors: The Convention has been ratified by Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan. The goal of the Convention is to identify and regulate the rights and obligations of the parties regarding the use of the Caspian Sea, including its waters, seabed, subsoil, natural resources and airspace over the sea. The document regulates issues related to the delimitation of national zones, jurisdictions and sovereignty, the exercise of subsoil use rights, transit and transportation, laying submarine pipelines and cables, protection of the environment and biological resources of the Caspian Sea.
