Diplomatic relations between the Republic of Kazakhstan and New Zealand established on May 12, 1992.
In April, 2016 Ian Hill appointed New Zealand Ambassador to Russia and in Kazakhstan concurrently.
Since 2017 Dr. Usen Suleimen appointed Kazakhstan Ambassador to New Zealand concurrently.
In May 1994, the Special Envoy to the Prime Minister of New Zealand Hugh Templeton visited Almaty, during which he met with President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev.
In 1995, Kazakhstan supported the New Zealand candidacy to the UNESCO Executive Committee.
In 2006, Chairman of Civil Service Affairs Agency Zautbek Turisbekov paid working visit to New Zealand to study New Zealand's experience in public administration system development and the fight against corruption.
Both countries share common positions on pressing global issues such as nuclear disarmament, international terrorism, the traffic, the illegal arms trade, climate change etc.
On 2-5 May, 2014 the New Zealand delegation consisting of the Minister of State Revenue Todd McClay and representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade Karl Vanderspin took part at the Board of Governors of the Asian Development Bank meeting held in Astana.
In 2014, New Zealand supported the initiative of Kazakhstan to join the Forum "Asia - Europe".
On July 1, 2014 by the order of the Governor-General of New Zealand, John. Mateparae Nurlan Smagulov was appointed Honorary Consul of the Republic of Kazakhstan in New Zealand with residence in Almaty.
On April 23, 2015 Special Envoy to the President of Kazakhstan - Member of the Senate of Kazakhstan Parliament Sergey Gromov visited Wellington, during which he met with Deputy Foreign Minister of New Zealand Gerard van Bohemen and the Director of the European Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (in charge of relations with Kazakhstan) Ian Hill.
On September 4, 2016 the New Zealand side was handed a letter of congratulation by the President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev addressed to Patsy Reddy on her election to the post of the Governor-General of New Zealand.
On September 22, 2016 on the sidelines of the 71st session of the UN General Assembly in New York Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan Erlan Idrissov held a bilateral meeting with Minister of Foreign Affairs of New Zealand Murray McCully.
On November 28, 2016 Ambassador of New Zealand to Kazakhstan Ian Hill presented his credentials to the Secretary of State of Kazakhstan Gulshara Abdykalikova.
Since January 1, 2017 New Zealand citizens are exempt from visa requirements to visit Kazakhstan for up to 30 days.
Trade and economic cooperation:
According to statistics of Kazakhstan, total trade volume between Kazakhstan and New Zealand in 2016 amounted to 5,396 million US dollars (exports of Kazakhstan - 42,1 thousand., Import - 5,393 million.). In 2015 the trade turnover amounted to 1,109 million US dollars (exports of Kazakhstan - 6.3 thousand., Import - 1.103 million.).
