Kazakhstan - Thailand Cooperation


General information

July 6, 1992 – diplomatic relations were established.

1997 - Diplomatic mission of Kazakhstan was opened in Bangkok.

January 25, 2012 – Diplomatic mission was reorganized into the Embassy of the Republic of Kazakhstan to the Kingdom of Thailand.

Since May 2013 the Ambassador of Kazakhstan to Thailand is Marat Yessenbayev

Since December 2012 the Ambassador of Thailand to Kazakhstan is Charn Jullamon.

Political cooperation

The official visit of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev in July 1993 became an important stage in establishment of the relations between Kazakhstan and Thailand. The Agreement on the Establishment of the Joint Commission on bilateral cooperation between Governments of the Republic of Kazakhstan and the Kingdom of Thailand was signed.

The official visit of the Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn of Thailand to Kazakhstan on April 17-20, 2015, gave the additional impetus to the development of the bilateral relations. The high guest was awarded by the Order “Dostyk” Second Degree.

Short term visit of the Princess of Thailand to Kazakhstan on April 6, 2015 and meeting with the governor of Almaty A.Yessimov gave additional dynamic to the development of the Kazakhstan-Thai interregional partnership.

As part of the exchange of high-level visits Deputy Prime Minister of Thailand S.Sathirathai (May 2005) and Prime Minister of Thailand T.Shinawatra (June 2006) visited Kazakhstan.

Cooperation between foreign ministries. In October 2004, S.Sathirathai, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Thailand, visited Kazakhstan. Protocol on Cooperation between the Foreign Ministries was signed following the results of the negotiations. In May 2005, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan K.Tokayev paid a working visit to Bangkok. On January 30- February 1, 2012 the visit of the Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs of Thailand J.Nonsrichai to Kazakhstan took place.

In January 2014 and February 2015 the Kazakh delegation led by Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan Y.Ashikbayev visited Thailand within the framework of Nuclear Security Summit Sherpa. During the visit in 2015 the meeting with the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Thailand N.Sinhaseni was held. Both sides mentioned the importance of the development of bilateral cooperation, intensification of trade, economic and investment cooperation, maintenance of the level of bilateral and multilateral cooperation.

In May 2015, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan Y.Ashikbayev visited Bangkok and participated at the 71st session of the UN ESCAP.

Inter-parliamentary cooperation. In October 2014 and January 2015, Member of Majilis of the Parliament of the Republic of Kazakhstan A.Samakova visited Thailand within the framework of the participation in the Executive Committee of the Asian Forum of Parliamentarians on Population and Development.

Inter-agency cooperation. On July 9, 2014 the visit of the Deputy Secretary-General of the Office of Civil Service Commission of Thailand V.Prasitsiriwongse to Kazakhstan took place. Memorandum of Understanding in the field of civil service between Kazakhstan and Thailand was signed.

Inter-regional cooperation. During March 11-13, 2015, the Kazakh delegation consisting of the representatives of the apparatus of akim of Astana participated at the 3rd meeting of Governors and Mayors of “Asia-Europe” Forum and held the meeting with the Governor of Bangkok S.Paribatra.

Trade and economic cooperation

Trade turnover between Kazakhstan and Thailand in 2014 amounted to 140.3 million dollars (export – 700 thousand, import – 139.6 million). The main exports are metals, imports – domestic and industrial equipments.

As of December 2014, the volume of Thai investments to Kazakhstan was 4.6 million US dollars, while Kazakhstan invested to Thai economy 10.9 million US dollars.

Investments. During August 1-16, 2013, the Head of Thailand Industrial Park «АМАТА Foundation» Vikrom Kromadit visited Kazakhstan. Purpose of visit was to explore the investments opportunities in industrial park of Kazakhstan.

In September 2013, international seminar on “Investment and business opportunities in Kazakhstan, Nigeria and South Africa” was held in Bangkok. In July 2014, thematic seminar on “Free trade between the Customs Union and Thailand” was held in Thailand. In August 2014, seminar on “Trade and investments opportunities between Kazakhstan and Thailand” was held in Bangkok.

During 2013-2015 a number of Thailand trade missions visited Kazakhstan to establish partnership relations with Kazakhstani businessmen and realization of investment projects.

On February 16, 2015, international conference on “Investment and business opportunities in Kazakhstan” was held in Bangkok. On May 30 and June 6, 2015, seminars for Thai businessmen were organized. As a result of the events, it was agreed to organize “Thailand week in Kazakhstan” with participation of businessmen of both countries in order to discuss new investment projects during June 15-18, 2015 in Astana and Almaty.

Energy. Thailand attaches great importance to the strengthening of bilateral cooperation with Kazakhstan in the field of energy and "green" economy. On March 5, 2015, the Ambassador of Kazakhstan in Thailand M.Yessenbayev met with the Minister of Energy of the Kingdom of Thailand N.Akrasani.

“Green economy”. During October 22-24, 2015, Thai delegation headed by the Deputy Director-General for Foreign Trade of the Ministry of Commerce of the Kingdom of Thailand M.Amatiakul participated at the 1st meeting of the international participants of EXPO 2017 and the International Forum “Future Energy”.

Tourism. One of the cooperation areas is tourism. The airline "Air Astana" carries out daily flights on the route Almaty-Bangkok-Almaty and flights on Astana-Bangkok-Astana twice a week. The number of Kazakhstani tourists in Thailand is growing steadily and by the end of 2014 was about 70 thousand.
