Kazakhstan - Sweden

General Information

On April 7, 1992 the countries established diplomatic relations.

In October 2010 Sweden opened its Embassy in Kazakhstan.

In December 2013 Kazakhstan opened its Embassy in Sweden.

Since January 2018 Ambassador of Sweden to Kazakhstan is Mats Foyer.

Since March 2019 Ambassador of Kazakhstan to Sweden is Kairat Abdrakhmanov.

Political cooperation

In October 2004 President of Kazakhstan N. Nazarbayev paid the first official visit to Sweden.

In February 2006 First Deputy Prime-minister of Sweden B. Ringholm visited Kazakhstan.

In December 2010 the Swedish delegation was headed by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Sweden, Mr. C.Bildt at the OSCE Summit in Astana.

In March 2013 Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan E.Idrissov paid
an official visit to Stockholm.

In April 2013 Minister of Foreign Affairs of Sweden C.Bildt attended the Ministerial Conference of the Istanbul Process on Afghanistan in Almaty.

In March 2015 Prime-ministers of Kazakhstan and Sweden K.Massimov and S. Löfven held talks on the margins of the Boao Forum.

Ministers K.Abrakhmanov and M.Wallström met three times in 2017:
within the framework of the Open Debates of the Ministerial Level of the UN Security Council (January, New York); Conference on Disarmament
(March, Geneva); on the sidelines of the 72nd session of the UNGA
(September, New York).

In October 2016 the first inter-ministerial consultations were held at the level of Directors of the MFA Departments of Kazakhstan and Sweden.

Inter-parliamentary cooperation. In June 2014 the delegation of Kazakh parliamentarians headed by Deputy Chairman of the Mazhilis of Kazakhstan
D. Nazarbayeva made a working visit to Sweden.

In March 2015 Speaker of the Mazhilis of the Parliament of Kazakhstan
K.Zhakupov held talks with Speaker of the Swedish Parliament U.Ahlin in the framework of the Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union in Hanoi (Vietnam).

In May 2016 Member of the Swedish Parliament, Vice-President of the OSCE PA's K.Härstedt visited Kazakhstan to participate in the International Conference “Religions against Terrorism".

In June 2017 Speaker of the Swedish Parliament U.Ahlin paid an official visit to Kazakhstan.

Trade and economic cooperation

In 2015, the Government of Sweden has included Kazakhstan in the list of 26 priority countries for export of Swedish products.

Turnover. In January-December 2017 the turnover amounted to 314.2 mln. USD (export – 190.8 mln., import – 123.4 mln.). In 2016 – 310.9 mln. USD (export – 145.4 mln., import – 165.4 mln.). In 2015 – 295.1 mln. USD (export – 187.7 million USD, import – 107.3 mln. USD).

Investment. In the period from 2005 to the 1st quarter of 2017, the gross inflow of direct investments from Sweden to Kazakhstan amounted to: 328 mln. USD. There is no gross outflow of direct investment from Kazakhstan to Sweden.

The main products exported by Kazakhstan to Sweden are: wheat, replacement tools for hand tools, machines (with or without mechanical drive),
as well as soy beans.

Kazakhstan's main import from Sweden includes: telephone sets, vehicles and mechanisms for transporting, grading, ground shaping, excavating, tamping, compacting, digging or drilling of ground, minerals or ores, electrical alarms, security or traffic control for railways, tram tracks, highways, inland waterways, parking facilities, ports or airdromes.

Joint ventures. Currently, more than 80 legal entities, branches and representative offices with Swedish participation have been registered in Kazakhstan, 51 of which are active.

Such renowned brands as «Telia-Company» («Kcell»), «Tele2», «Ericsson», «Scania», «ABB», «Alfa Laval», «Atlas Copco», «Electrolux» and others are among the companies operating in Kazakhstan.

State secretary for EU Affairs and Trade O.Stenström visited Kazakhstan in January 2017.

A working visit of vice-minister of Investment and development
of Kazakhstan E.Khairov to Sweden was held in August 2017.

On 2 October 2017, «Atlas Copco» won «Kazakhmys» contracts for the related production operations in 11 fields in Central Kazakhstan (contracts for mining trucks, special facilities, etc.).

AIFC. The delegation of the Republic of Kazakhstan headed by Governor of Astana International Financial Centre (AIFC) K.Kelimbetov paid a visit to Stockholm in August 2016.

Agriculture. A visit of Swedish Minister for Rural Affairs S.Bucht to Kazakhstan was carried out in October 2016.

IT technologies. The Swedish business delegation (ASS ABLOY, Axis Communications, Ericsson, IFS, Telia Company) visited the Republic of Kazakhstan on October 26-27, 2016.

Space industry. The space agencies of Kazakhstan and Sweden signed the Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation in the field of space activities in June 2013 in Paris, within the framework of the International Paris Air Show
«La Bourget»;

A visit of the Kazakh delegation led by the Adviser to the President of the National Company «Kazakhstan Gharysh Sapary» to Sweden was conducted at the invitation of the Swedish Space Corporation (“SSC") шn November 2014.

Healthcare. The Swedish company Diaverum closely collaborates with the Ministry of Healthcare of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

Cultural and humanitarian cooperation

Education. Now 6 persons are studying within the framework of the «Bolashak» program in Sweden to acquire the following qualifications: biotechnology, bioengineering, bioinformatics, molecular genetics (2 persons); physics, astronomy (1 person); electronics, radio engineering, telecommunications (1 person); biology (1 person); water resources and water use (1 person).

31 people graduated from Swedish higher education institutions: the Karolinska Institute, the universities of Stockholm, Lund, Malmo, Uppsala, etc.;

Student A.Akhmetova from Kazakhstan was awarded the prestigious «Global Swede Award 2017». Besides studying, she was involved in the development of two startups - in the field of medicine and artificial intelligence - and she is also a Digital Ambassador of the Karolinska Institute (a network of service centers operating under the same brand at the international level).
