Kazakhstan - Czech Republic

General information

On January 1 1993, the Republic of Kazakhstan and the Czech Republicestablished the diplomatic relations.

In December 1994, the Embassy of the Czech Republic in the Republic of Kazakhstan was opened.

In April 1997, the Diplomatic Mission of the Republic of Kazakhstan in the Czech Republic was opened.

In 2004, the Diplomatic Mission was upgraded to the level of Embassy of the Republic of Kazakhstan in the Czech Republic.

Since December 10 2014, Ambassador of the Czech Republic to Kazakhstan is Eliska Zigova.

Political relations

Since the establishment of diplomatic relations two countries has been enjoying sustainable political dialogue and expanding economic cooperation.

The Czech Republic supported Kazakhstan's bid for UN Security Council Non-Permanent Membership for 2017-2018. The Czech Republic also supported Kazakhstan to host EXPO-2017 in Astana.

Visits at the highest level

On September 2004, the President of the Czech Republic V.Klaus made an official visit to Kazakhstan.

On October 2012, the President of Kazakhstan N.Nazarbayev visited Prague with a reciprocal official visit.

On November 2014, the President of Czech Republic M.Zeman made an official visit to Kazakhstan.

Visits of Prime Ministers

On October 1996, the Prime Minister of Kazakhstan made an official visit to Prague.

On April 1999, the Prime Minister of the Czech Republic M.Zeman visited Kazakhstan with an official visit.

On February 2009, the Prime Minister of the Czech Republic M.Topolanek made a working visit to Astana.

MFA visits

On March 1995, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic Josef Zieleniecvisited Kazakhstan with an official visit.

On January 2004, the Deputy Prime Minister –Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Czech RepublicC.Svobodavisited Kazakhstan with an official visit.

On April 2009, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan M.TazhinvisitedPrague with a working visit.

On December 2010, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Czech RepublicK. Schwarzenberg participated in OSCE Summit in Astana.

On November 2016, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic L.Zaoralekvisited Kazakhstan with an official visit.The Minister of Regional Development of the Czech Republic Karla Šlechtová and strong business delegation accompanied him.

Inter-parliamentary cooperation

Two countries have been enjoying an active Inter-parliamentary cooperation, which is marked by regular mutual visits.

The parliaments of our countries formed a Group of friendship

On 6-7 February 2017, the Chairman of the Chamber of Deputiesof the Czech RepublicJ.Hamachekvisited Kazakhstan with an official visit.

On July 2017, the Chairman of the Senate of Parliament of the Czech RepublicM.Stechvisited Kazakhstan and participated in the National Day of the Czech Republic in EXPO-2017.

Trade and economic cooperation

According to the official data of Ministry of Finance of the Republic of Kazakhstan, in 2017 bilateral trade between two countries amounted to 267 million USD(import – 190mln., export – 77mln.), in 2016 – to 252 million (import – 186 mln., export – 66mln.).

Kazakhstan exports oil and gas products, chemicals, namely yellow phosphorus and metals. Import from the Czech Republic consists of the various types of equipment, machinery, electrical devices, pharmaceuticals, furniture, glass, ceramics and other goods.

The major role in development of bilateral trade and economic interaction plays Kazakhstan-Czech Intergovernmental Commission (IGC) on the trade-economic, industrial and scientific-technical cooperation. Since 2005 until 2017, IGC was held9 times.

Cultural cooperation

A number of cultural events were held in order to introduce to local society the traditions, culture and history of Kazakhstan. Approximately 2000 students from Kazakhstan are studying in theCzech Republic.
