Kazakhstan - Libya

Diplomatic relations between the Republic of Kazakhstan and the State of Libya established on March 13, 1992.

In the same year the Embassy of the Libya was openedin Almaty. The Embassy of the Republic of Kazakhstan in Tripoli is operated since July 2003.

In connection with the revolutionary events that took place in Libya, the diplomatic mission of our country was closed in October 2011.At present, the interests of our country in this state is represented by the Embassy of the Republic of Kazakhstan in Egypt.

Charge d'Affaires of Libya in Kazakhstan is Ziyad Abdulaziz.

The official visit of the First Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Libya Saad Mustafa Mujbir to the Republic of Kazakhstan between November 7 and 10, 2000, began the expansion of bilateral relations. Within the framework of the visit, the Libyan diplomat was received by the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan NursultanNazarbayev.

Over the years, our countries have exchanged visits at various levels:

The visit of the parliamentary delegation led by the Deputy Chairman of the Majilis(the lower house of the bicameral Parliament of Kazakhstan) M.Kopei to Libya (November 2002);

The visit of the delegation of the Foreign Ministry of Libya to Astana, which took part in the inauguration ceremony of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan N.Nazarbayev (January 2006);

Two delegations of JSC "KazMunayGas" visited Libya in order to establish and intensify cooperation between the two countries in the oil and gas field (June 2004 and July 2013);

On October 2008 the Delegation of the All-National Foreign Relations and International Cooperation Committeeof the Libya the framework of his working visit to Astana, met with the leadership of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

The delegations of the World Association of Islamic Call, whose headquarter is in the Tripoli, participated in the work of the II and IIICongresses of Leaders of World and Traditional Religionsin Astana.

In 1992, during the official visitof the Minister of Finance of Libya to the Kazakhstanwas signed an Agreement on the establishment of a Kazakh-Libyan Joint intergovernmental commission.

Two meetings of the Joint Kazakhstan-Libyan intergovernmental commission were held (January 2003, Tripoli and November 2007, Astana).

From 2012 to 2014 «The Rompetrol Group» (on March 2015 renamed «KazMunayGas International»), the subsidiary company of «KazMunaiGas» JSC, resumed drilling operations in Libya, which stopped in 2011 due to the outbreak of civil war.

Despite the almost annual downtime, mentioned Kazakh Company provided social assistance and payment of wages over 100 its former Libyan co-workers.

Trade between the Republic of Kazakhstan and the State of Libya in 2014 was 1,8mln. USD and in 2015 was 0,4mln. USD.
