Kazakhstan and South Korea established diplomatic relations on January 28

The Embassy of the Republic of Korea in the Republic of Kazakhstan was opened in 1993, and the Embassy of the Republic of Kazakhstan in the Republic of Korea has been functioning since 1996.

Kazakhstan and Korea are strategic partners and at the stage of its active deepening. There are no political disagreements between Astana and Seoul. Korean leadership highly values achievements of Kazakhstan in political, social and economic fields, supports Kazakhstan initiatives as CICA, the Congress of Leaders of World and Traditional Religions and actively participates in their development.

Economies of both nations do not compete with each other rather have complementary features. Mentalities of our nations, customs, believes, even Kazakh and Korean languages are quite similar.

Kazakhstan and the Republic of Korea have similar long-term interests, mutual understanding of responsibility for international security and stability in Asia.

For Kazakhstan, which has its own interests in Asia-Pacific region and Asia as a whole, it is important to develop strong relations with South Korea, which is one of the leader in the region. Enhancing the global role of Seoul in the 21st century, the country's geopolitical location and direct involvement in one of the main issues of the international agenda (North Korea) make it one of the key players in East Asia.

Bilateral Friendship and Cooperation Groups functions between the Parliaments of the two countries.

Annual highest-level summits indicate friendship and strength of relations between our countries. The agreements between the leaders show high dynamic relationship and impressive results.

The Presidents of the Republic of Korea had three times State visits (Roh Moo-hyun September 18-20, 2004, Lee Myung-bak May 12-14, 2009, Park Geun-Hye June 18-20, 2014) two Official visits (Lee Myung-bak August 24-25 , 2011, September 13-14, 2012) to Kazakhstan.

In addition, President Nazarbayev met with South Korean leaders on the sidelines of international events in third countries (with Lee Myung-Bak August 9, 2008 during Olympics Games in Beijing, with Park Geun-Hye September 6, 2013 within the G20 Summit in St.Petersburg, as well as September 4-5, 2016 a brief meeting in Hangzhou on the sidelines of the G20 Summit).

Trade and economic cooperation

According to the Kazakhstan's State Revenue Committee, the volume of trade between Kazakhstan and the Republic of Korea in January-November 2017 amounted to USD 1,465 billion, which doubles the figure of the same period of 2016 (USD 627 million). Kazakhstan's export reached USD 941,1 million, and import amounted to USD 524 million.

The main items of Kazakhstan's exports are uranium, ferro-alloys, non-alloy rolled steel and iron, gold, copper.

The main items of Kazakhstan's imports are electronics, equipment and products of mechanical engineering, car parts (including cabs) for vehicles, automobiles and other vehicles.

There are over 900 legal entities, branches and representative offices with South Korean participation registered in Kazakhstan.

One of the distinguishing features of the relations between our countries is the presence of strong cultural and humanitarian ties. Our relations in this field has reached a very high level. The Korean diaspora in Kazakhstan plays an important role as a unique bridge between our nations, especially in cultural and humanitarian field.

There is a Department of Kazakhstan studies functioning in the University of Kangnam. Moreover, Kazakh language is taught at the Department of Central Asian Studies in the Hankuk University of Foreign Studies.

Both countries organize different cultural events on a regular basis. Prominent Kazakhstani artists such as Musahodjayeva and “The Academy of Soloists", Murzabekova, Aubakirova, Usenbayeva, and groups Yelimai, Isker, Naryn, Adyrna, Altynai, Didar, Naz, Dauren visited the Republic of Korea with concerts in recent years. The partnership between the Symphony Orchestra of the Kazakh State Philharmonic Orchestra and the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra has been established. Cultural Years of Kazakhstan in Korea and of Korea in Kazakhstan were held.

Cooperation on the regional level is also actively developing.

The capitals of the two countries have become sister cities in 2004. There is also the Protocol of Friendship and Cooperation between Aktau and Changwon cities. Bilateral trade and investment events with the participation of South-Kazakhstan, Mangystau, Aktobe, East-Kazakhstan and other regions are held annually.
