Cooperation with the World Meteorological Organization discussed by the Kazakhstan Ambassador

On October 30, 2017, Mrs. Zhanar Aitzhanova, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of the Republic of Kazakhstan, had a meeting with Mr. Petteri Taalas, Secretary-General of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO).

The parties discussed the current status of bilateral cooperation, as well as prospects of further improvement of the National Hydrometeorological Service of Kazakhstan.

Ambassador Aitzhanova noted that the Republic of Kazakhstan represented by the National Hydrometeorological Service "Kazhydromet" successfully cooperates with the World Meteorological Organization in the field of climate monitoring and forecasting. Currently, as part of the exchange of information between the WMO member countries, "Kazhydromet" transmits data from 65 climate stations and 8 upper-air stations and has access to data base of other countries.

At the same time, Kazakhstan Ambassador asked for WMO technical assistance to improve the methodology for applying the best flood forecasting models, including hydrological forecasting in Kazakhstan. On the extension of the license agreement with the European Organization for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites (EUMETSAT), which expires in November 2018. This agreement gives Kazakhstan the opportunity to use meteorological data from the EUMETSAT satellites.

Secretary-General of WMO assured the readiness of the Organization to continue cooperation, including by signing and implementing the Strategic Plan for the Development of the Meteorological Service, based on existing experience with other countries.

The WMO is the specialized agency and the only authoritative voice of the UN system on the state and behavior of the Earth's atmosphere, its interaction with the land and oceans, the weather and climate it produces and the resulting distribution of water resources.

The Republic of Kazakhstan ratified the WMO Convention on April 13, 1993, which triggered the development of international scientific and technical cooperation of Kazhydromet with foreign hydrometeorological services and more efficient servicing of the economy and the population of the Republic.
