The 55th session of the Scientific and Technical Subcommittee of the Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS), organized by the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA), was held at the Vienna International Centre 29 January – 9 February 2018. The Kazakhstan delegation taking part in the event was headed by Mr. M.Nurguzhin, Vice-Minister of Defense and Aerospace Industry of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
At the plenary session of the Scientific and Technical Subcommittee the Vice-minister has made a report on the activities of Kazakhstan in the field of peaceful exploration of outer space. During the event the participants have also watched a presentation about Kazakhstan's national space program.
Within the framework of the visit the Vice-minister conducted a meeting with the Director of UNOOSA S.DiPippo, during which the parties have discussed current issues of cooperation between the Republic of Kazakhstan and UNOOSA, including the potential interaction within the framework of the International Charter on “Space and Major Disasters", the “Global Space Partnership" program and the “UN-SPIDER" platform.
The Vice-minister has also invited S.DiPippo to take part in the V International Exhibition Weapons Systems and Military Equipment "KADEX-2018", which will be held from May 23 to 26, 2018 in Astana. For the first time, the International Forum "Space Days in Kazakhstan" will be held within the framework of the exhibition, which will become one of the central dialogue platforms of the exhibition.Kazakhstan considers the international cooperation in the field of peaceful uses of outer space to be very important, including the interaction with the UNOOSA. A special segment of the 61st session of COPUOS called “UNISPACE+50" shall be held on 20-21 June, 2018 to which a Kazakhstan delegation is planned to participate at a high level.
