Biography of Qasym-Jomart Tokayev
Qasym–Jomart Tokayev took the oath of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan at the joint meeting of Kazakhstan Parliament Houses, Kazpravda.kz correspondent reports.
Qasym–Jomart Tokayev was born on May 17, 1953 in Almaty. In 1975 he graduated from the Moscow State Institute of International Relations and entered the service in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the USSR. He was sent to work at the embassy in the Republic of Singapore.
From 1979 to 1983, he was Senior Assistant, Attache, and Third Secretary of the USSR Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
From 1983 to 1984 – intern at the Beijing Institute of Chinese language.
From 1984 to 1985 – Third Secretary of the USSR Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
From 1985 to 1991 – the second, and then the first secretary of the USSR Embassy in the PRC.
From 1993 to 1994 – he was Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
In 1994 to 1999 – Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
In 1999 he was Deputy Prime Minister of Kazakhstan.
From 1999 to 2002 – Acting Prime Minister of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
In 2002 to 2003 – Secretary of State – Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
From 2003 to 2007 – he was the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
In 2007–2011 – deputy, chairman of the Senate of the Parliament of the RK of the third convocation.
From 2011 to 2013 – UN Deputy Secretary–General, Head of the European Office of the United Nations in Geneva.
October 16, 2013 was elected the RK Senate Speaker.
He is a member of the people's democratic party Nur Otan since June 2007, member of the Nur Otan Political Council Bureau since July 2007.
On March 19, Nursultan Nazarbayev announced the termination of his powers as the President of Kazakhstan. Qasym–Jomart Tokayev became Interim President of Kazakhstan. Nursultan Nazarbayev will continue to perform the duties of the chairman of the Security Council of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the chairman of the Nur Otan party, and a member of the Constitutional Council of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
