Kassym-Jomart Tokayev and Donald Tusk visited ALZHIR memorial complex

After the bilateral talks in Akorda Presidential Palace, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev and Donald Tusk visited “The Akmola's Camp for Wives of Traitors of the Motherland” Memorial (known as ALZHIR)

As you know, Donald Tusk is a pole, he twice was the Prime Minister of Poland. And it is quite symbolic that his visit coincided with the date when Kazakhstan marks the Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Political Repressions.

It is known that as a result of political repressions of the 1930th of the 20th century the territory of Kazakhstan turned into a huge camp. Many industrial enterprises were provided with labor only at the expense of convicts and their forced labor. Hundreds of thousands of prisoners passed through the camps in Kazakhstan. At the end of the 30s representatives of different nations, including poles were deported to Kazakhstan. Among the victims of mass political repression in the USSR, the poles formed one of the largest ethnic groups.
